Esomeprazole is the brand name for Pepcid ACR-60, the extended-release version of the drug designed to reduce stomach acid by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks down stomach acid. It is also used to treat GERD, a chronic condition in which the stomach produces acid that is necessary for heartburn to be preserved.
“The best choice for long-term treatment is a prescription,” says Franklin. “If you need a prescription for a long-term treatment, you can visit a pharmacy or.”
As a result, over half of all heartburn sufferers are using this drug as a long-term treatment, Franklin notes. But the decision to use Pepcid ACR-60 as a long-term treatment is not without risks and misconceptions.

To minimize the risk of side effects, Franklin recommends taking the drug at the same time each day for 14 to 20 days. “If you are using this medication, you should check with your doctor to determine if it is safe for you to take this drug and then,” he adds.
Another misconception is that the drug will stop heartburn in the same way as a heartburn medication. “The drug will stop the acid from building up in the stomach,” Franklin says.
